The height of a cane is primarily determined by the user's overall height. Ideally, it should match a cane that the user finds comfortable. If no existing cane is available, measure the user while they wear their typical walking shoes. Have them stand upright with arms at their sides, bending slightly at the elbows; then measure from their wrist joint to the floor, rounding up to the nearest half inch.
Alternatively, a cane height can be estimated at one--half (1/2) of the users' overall height in inches. (Example: If the user is 5 ft. tall, 5ft. X 12in.= 60 inches. One half would be 30 inches for the approx. cane height.)
Walking sticks are designed for hiking and should generally reach shoulder height. They typically range in height from 42 inches to 54 inches. To size a walking stick, extend your arm at a comfortable angle as if you’re holding it. Measure from your hand to the ground; the stick can either stop at this point or extend an additional 6 inches above your hand for a better fit.
Walking Sticks can become quite heavy when using many of the hardwoods, so consider this when choosing a species.
Walking staffs serve both functional and decorative purposes, often extending above the head. They are great for hiking and certainly make a bold statement. Sourcing a straight piece of wood can be challenging, so Aspen is often used. If necessary, two pieces of different species can be joined to achieve the desired length for your staff.
As with Walking Sticks, a Walking Staff can become quite large and overall weight should be considered when choosing wood species.
With an interview about the specific needs of each user, we can determine the need for any modifications or additions to accommodate physical or medical limitations.
These might include an ergonomic handle, a stabilizing foot, and reinforcing steel threaded rods to ensure all joints are strong and safe.
